Icons of the 20th Century
"Each man, each woman, hides a secret; and as a photographer, my duty is to reveal it, if I manage to!".
The remarkable artistic career of Yousuf Karsh was matched only by the extraordinary lives of cultural, political, artistic and intellectual figures that he photographed.
For this picture taken in 1956, Grace Kelly welcomed Yousuf Karsh to her New York apartment in blue jeans, with her hair in curlers! A few moments later, after running a comb through her hair and quickly changing her clothes, the beautiful woman, and future Serene Highness, emerged. His portrait of the royal couple in cameo profile shooted that same day, would later be used as the official photograph and stamp of Monaco.
This exhibition celebrates his exceptional contribution to shaping personal and historical memory throughout the twentieth century.
Until January 26th 2014, at Mona Bismarck American Center for Art and Culture.
