Ed van der Elsken, camera in Love
The Jeu de Paume highlights Ed van der Elsken, a unique figure in Dutch photography and documentary cinema in the 20th century.
In photography, Ed van der Elsken's favorite area was the street. The modernity of his images and their quasi-cinematographic character are in harmony with the model of the nonconformist life of the young people whose daily life he shared.
Often referred to as a "marginal photographer," he sought in reality a form of aesthetics, plastic truth, without artifice, a beauty sometimes openly sensual and even erotic. Ed van der Elsken was fascinated by these proud, exuberant and vibrant characters.
