Degas at the Opera
Degas at the Opera, Musée d'Orsay
The Opera formed the focal point of Degas’ work, from his early career in the 1860's to his later work after the turn of the century. The theatre’s various spaces were much explored from the auditorium and stage, boxes, foyers to the dance studios. Degas shadowed dancers, singers, musicians as well as audience members. This closed world was open to one man who was able to experiment with contrasts of lighting and the study of motion.
This exhibition is a first, focusing on Degas' intricate relationship with the Palais Garnier and his musical tastes. The unprecedented exhibitions allows a portrait of the Paris Opera in the 19th century through the eyes of a master painter.
From 24th September 2019 to the 19th January 2020 at the Musée d'Orsay
